Programs in Schools

The following programs for schools can be scheduled individually or combined to create a customized residency. While they are often used to augment curriculums that include the Oregon Trail, Lewis & Clark Expedition, or Westward Expansion, the also work well for any special event such as a Family Night or Pioneer Day celebration.

1) THE OLD-TIME MUSIC SHOW

Typically 40-minutes in length, the show features a delightful mix of historical information, playful dialogue, audience participation, and pioneer music played on the banjo, guitar, autoharp, spoons, musical saw, jewsharp, noseflute, limberjack, harmonica, ukulele, washboard, and washtub bass. The show is appropriate for all ages and can be scheduled as an all-school assembly or classroom workshop(s). Sound system provided.

2) FRAYED KNOT - pioneer string figures & string magic

In this classroom workshop students learn how to weave a simple loop of string into a variety of lifelike figures and magic escape tricks, just like the pioneers did! Extremely popular! Each workshop is typically 25-40 minutes in length, and is appropriate for grades 2 and up. String and follow-up materials provided.

3) OLD-TIME HOEDOWN - American square,circle, and line dancing

Typically scheduled as a 25-40 minute classroom workshop or a 60-90 minute family event in the early evening. Participants learn a variety of pioneer dances right on the spot! No prior experience is necessary! Appropriate for ages 6 and up. Sound system provided.
